I love photographing Swallows. They’re such a physical band that I end up working up a sweat myself just trying to keep up with them. Though its nothing to the sweat these guys produce playing their particular version of frantic and emotive post-hardcore.
Since the band replaced a guitarist and shed a singer this is probably the best I’ve seen them. Not just because they spent as much time on the floor, or hanging from the rafters, as they did on-stage but because Swallows really seem to have found their song-writing groove.
The band’s latest material, especially the utterly ferocious “Hangman”, is short, aggressive and remarkably dynamic for being so fleeting. The cinematic tendencies of post-rock find themselves bolted onto the break neck pace of punk, the melodic sensibility of emo and the muscular nature of modern hardcore.
It’s maybe not a hugely original sound, but when the performances are this intense and the songs are this good it’s nothing short of totally compelling.
