Broadcast has one thing going for it: it’s stage set up is a stupid big L. What an excellent choice of letter.
I don’t often get to shoot drummers, which really sucks because 1) everyone knows drums are cool and 2) hitting stuff really hard always looks great in photos.
I love the range of dynamic movements you can see across a drummers set and I hate not being able to shoot it that often. The other week though I get to photograph one of my good mates beating his drum set senseless in Broadcast and that was a tremendous way to spend a Tuesday evening.
Not just because of the sweet shapes, though those were great, but it feels great to see someone I’ve known for so long really develop their own style in their craft and fucking deliver that style with…I don’t know? Style? That’ll do anyway.
Great tunes are always great and a good show is always good but sometimes focusing on the little things, the little things that happen so slowly you don’t even notice them, make everything that bit better.
Also, drums are cool. Did I cover that?
If you like your rock music full of huge vocals, walls of sound and those cool stop/start bits that are great to strike a pose to then you should go and listen to Life on Standby. Or don’t. Or whatever.
