I’ve no idea why I didn’t post this set earlier…probably something lame to do with real life working or being too ginger or something.
Regardless, here’s a set of Eva Plays Dead bringing the “rock” and other minerals to Broadcast a wee while back. I’m forced to confess, I didn’t think much of the band on record from what I heard before the show. It wasn’t bad…but it didn’t have the eclecticism or edge that musical snobbery demands of contemporary UK rock bands. The taste for revitalising the obtuse and disgusting “rock ‘n’ roll” excesses and style of yesterday does nothing for me. Because I’m a grown up. (allegedly.)
On the other hand…the band sure can play. I was definitely impressed. Musically it might not be ground breaking, but its hard to deny how effective the band are in the live arena. They made an unfairly sparsely populated Broadcast feel like a captivating, sweat box, punk rock gig. If you’ve ever been to Broadcast. That’s no mean achievement.
I’m intrigued to see where the band go in future. Their current recordings still sound a bit too safe and rock for a band who deliver something a lot more intense and interesting live. A bit of rawness and a few more out there ideas could well see them take a place amongst the tremendously talented UK rock scene. (It is. Don’t believe the idiots on-line. There’s so many bands who deserve your time for being genuinely excellent.)
Or they might just keep playing cool little shows. That’s no bad run either.
