I don’t have a whole lot to say about this set. Rolo Tomassi are amazing, this gig was amazing, getting to photograph it was amazing.
It was hard to shoot, the privileged safety of a photo pit wasn’t an option and the crowd were exactly the way you’re always told the best rock crowds should be. I’ll happily take the bruises and aches to be at shows like this.
Gigs like this are special and bands like Rolo Tomassi are special. It’s a shame they don’t seem to have gained the momentum they deserve on the back of performances like this, but who cares? Music is a business, but it’s not a business first and foremost.
For my money, playing shows as visceral and intense as this is more success than All Time Low selling out the Hyrdo. It defines on your definitions I guess, which given the band’s music defies definition is awkward, but shows like this are the definition of the punk rock spirit in its purest form.
It doesn’t matter how often the NME or the broadsheets write boring and ill informed articles that tell you punk and rock is dead. It’s more alive than ever in shows like this.
